The Association of Certified Forensic Investigators (ACFI) offers an opportunity for individuals interested in the realms of fraud prevention, detection, investigation, and mitigation to become Affiliates. This affiliation serves as an excellent stepping stone for those considering pursuing the prestigious Certified Forensic Investigator (CFI) designation.
Achieving the CFI designation signifies reaching the highest standards of excellence in the forensic investigation field. This certification is exclusively available to ACFI Affiliates who fulfill strict criteria related to experience, education, and examination.
For those Affiliates who may not yet meet the required experience for the CFI designation, there is a valuable interim option. They can attain the Certified Forensic Technician (CFT) designation, which recognizes their foundational knowledge and competence in the field. This designation remains available until they gain the necessary experience to qualify for the CFI certification.
By pursuing Affiliation and working towards the CFI or CFT designation, individuals not only enhance their professional credentials but also contribute to building a community dedicated to the integrity and advancement of forensic investigation practices.
Steps
1. AFFILIATE STAGE
Timing: 2 weeks+
Cost: $175.00
The ACFI welcomes the affiliation of individuals that have an interest in the prevention, detection, investigation and mitigation of fraud and fraud-related activities. For those individuals that wish to demonstrate the highest standard of excellence in the field, affiliation is also the first stage to membership as a Certified Forensic Investigator.
2. EXAMINATION STAGE
Timing: 3 months (approx.)
Cost: $275
The next stage leading to admission to regular membership in the Association of Certified Forensic Investigators (ACFI) of Canada is the preparation for and the successful completion of the ACFI Examination. The ACFI exam, is based upon the body of knowledge contained within the ACFI Fraud Manual which is included.
3. CERTIFICATION STAGE
Timing: 3-6 months
Cost: Balance of years membership / $250 per year after certification
Upon successful review by the Membership Committee of the formal verification of your application materials and a criminal record check, you will receive the CFI certification symbolizing the highest standard of excellence in its field.

ACFI Exam: Must achieve a minimum score of 70% on the exam.
CFT candidates need to accumulate both a solid amount of education points and exam results to meet the qualifications for the CFT designation. Once the CFT has the required number of points for experience, they can convert their designation into a CFI.

CFT
Certified Forensic Technician
The Certified Forensic Technician (CFT) designation is awarded to individuals who have met the educational requirements and passed the relevant examinations. Becoming a CFT serves as a crucial step for those aspiring to advance in the field of forensic investigation.
The primary distinction between a CFT and a CFI is related to experience. While CFTs possess the necessary educational background to qualify for CFI status, they are currently in the process of gaining practical experience. As CFTs accumulate the required hands-on experience within the forensic field, they can transition to full CFI status, which denotes a higher level of expertise and capability in forensic investigations.
Who Qualifies
The Certified Forensic Technician achieves this designation through
education and examination. To apply for the CFT you must be an Affiliate of the ACFI.

What if I want to network and stay informed, but I do not fully meet the qualifications for certification?
Did you know that you can become an Affiliate and maintain that membership level for life? This option allows individuals working in the field of investigation who may not fully meet the designation criteria to enjoy membership discounts for networking events, workshops, conferences, educational materials and more.
As a student, I am just entering the field and do not meet the qualification criteria. What alternatives do I have to become involved?
The ACFI offers a student discount to become a Student Affiliate for those enrolled in Educational Partnership programs from institutions such as the University of Toronto, Algonquin, Seneca, Conestoga and others. Students enjoy membership perks, networking events, and stay informed at a discounted rate.
Do I require a degree to become certified?
Education may come in many forms. It is not necessary to have a post-secondary degree. To become a CFT or CFI eligibility is based on the overall sum of a number factor. Please refer to the checklist which is included in the ACFI Application form. You will note that there is no minimum requirement for formal education.
Are there any exam waivers?
The reliability of Certified Forensic Investigator (CFI) certification is based on education, experience and examination. There are no other certifications/designations that provide a 100% overlap with the ACFI body of knowledge. Therefore, no, there are no examination waivers.
